MIDLAND, TEXAS – In the dusty heart of West Texas, rows of tall white wind turbines and rust-colored working pump jacks bob up and down along the vast rugged landscape.

It’s a visual juggernaut but make no mistake – this is shale country and in this part of the Lone Star State, legends are born and billions are made every single day.

CLAYTON, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Transportation this week approved more than $950,000 in funding to support a rail-expansion project by a Clayton-based company. Pattison Sand Co. will receive a $700,482 loan and $252,000 grant through the DOT’s Railroad Revolving Loan and Grant Program. The funds will help Pattison Sand create a spur track, allowing the company to load railcars without disrupting the main rail line.

Laura Hutzell, of the Iowa DOT, said the funding supports the second phase of the five-phase rail project. This phase includes the creation of 3,300 feet of track and 78 additional railcar spots.

HYDRAULIC FRACTURING IS LOWERING COSTS AND CREATING ENORMOUS ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES. Writing for investment guide The Motley Fool, Jason Hall writes a piece titled, Bet You'd Be Shocked by How Much of Our Natural Gas Comes from Fracking.

Citing the U.S. Energy Information Service, “A whopping two thirds of the natural gas produced in the U.S. is produced with hydraulic fracturing.” And that number is increasing by the day. The benefits to Americans and our economy are numerous.

U.S. shale oil production in April was set for its biggest monthly increase since October as output in the Permian Basin, America's fastest growing shale oil region, was expected to hit another record high, government data showed on Monday.

Total shale oil production was expected to rise 109,000 barrels per day to 4.96 million bpd, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's drilling productivity report.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Benchmark Brent gained while U.S. crude eased slightly on Monday, after the market pushed higher early in the day on reports that Iraq would participate if OPEC extended oil production curbs into the second half of the year.

Output forecasts from oil ministers of crude-producing countries buffeted the market as industry leaders gathered at the annual CERAweek energy conference in Houston. Prices have been rangebound for more than 60 days on concerns U.S. production growth may undermine the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' agreement to cut output during the first half of the year.

Over the last few years, pattison sand has grown into one of the leaders in the silica sand mining business. Now they are opening up what promises to be a new era. As part of an ambitious project to improve local rail efficiency, they are building a state-of-the-art rail load out on their property. That will require the removal of millions of tons of rock. But, instead of simply piling the waste rock somewhere, they will process, recycle it and put it to good use. The project will also create at least 30 new jobs for the area.

A vast field of shale rock in West Texas could yield 20 billion barrels of oil, making it the largest source of shale oil the U.S. Geological Survey has ever assessed, agency officials said. The Wolfcamp Shale geologic formation in the Midland area also contains an estimated 16 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.6 billion barrels of natural gas liquids, the agency said in a release. The discovery is nearly three times larger than the shale oil found in 2013 in the Bakken and Three Forks formations in the Dakotas and Montana, said Chris Schenk, a Denver-based research geologist for the agency.
