The Iowa Department of Public Health releases letter summarizing evaluation of potential health impacts from the operation of the Pattison Sand Company mine located near Clayton, Iowa.

By Pattison Sand Company 14 June, 2016

In conjunction with the ongoing Clayton County (Iowa) mine reserve expansion study regarding potential environmental impacts of the Pattison Sand Company mine located near Clayton, Iowa, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has recently issued a consultation letter.  The study directly addresses concerns expressed by residents living near the mine site.

In a letter dated May 31, 2016, the Department addressed the potential for adverse health impacts from exposure to respirable dust and silica.  They also responded to concerns surrounding acrylamides that may be present in ground water from the flocculent used in water processing.

In its conclusion on airborne dust and silica, the IDPH consultation letter stated: “If the amount of airborne dust and silica remain close to the levels during the April 2016 sampling event, it can be concluded that adverse respiratory health impact will not be experienced by workers at the mine site and by people living near the mine from inhalation exposure to dust and silica.”

Regarding acrylamide, the IDPH consultation letter stated:  “In addition, the levels of acrylamide found within surface water runoff during the September 2013 and April 2016 monitoring events at the site are below detectable laboratory methods and below levels of acrylamide that would pose health impacts to people using this surface water as drinking water.”

Kyle Pattison, owner of Pattison Sand Company LLC said regarding the results, “We remain committed to the health and safety of our employees and all our neighbors.  We will continue to be good stewards of the environment.  We will utilize effective engineering and other state-of-the-art controls to proactively control or eliminate all potential hazards at the source.  We will also continue to periodically monitor respirable dust, silica and acrylamides to ensure that we maintain levels well below those that can impact human health.”
